Ancestry

Brave travellers have landed here,
on these warm beaches
of the Ionian Sea—
greek heroes, and recently,
war-worn fugitives.

The Bronzes of Riace
still look like heroes—
their muscles and curls
once mistaken for
seaside creatures.

From the nearby hills
of olive groves and sunshine,
the waters seem to speak
of miracles.

The sun was friendly
when I first came
to the land
you loved so much.
