Mostly Water

by Sandy Carlson

Their grey bodies curve with the grey waves.
Dolphins negotiate water by
Becoming it, though they draw breath from
The blue space between heaven and earth,
Weaving sky and water into a
Living fabric, each breath a thread, each stream
Of bubbles, a seam.
                            A Cuban boy
Dropped through the mesh, an ungainly pup.
Dolphins taught him to breathe, bringing him
To the surface of the grey water
Between Cuba and Miami. He
Said-he was five at the time-they kept
Him alive.
                   Some folks called it magic.
