A Bouquet of Triolets for Bridget Bishop

by Judy Stainer

Poor Bridget Bishop, guilty still
though "innocent as child unborn;"
they hanged her high on Gallow's Hill.
Poor Bridget Bishop, guilty still
and all because her coat was torn.
Poor Bridget Bishop, guilty still
though "innocent as child unborn."

In Salem which means Shalom, peace,
religious "freedom" took its toll
as Puritans without surcease
in Salem which means Shalom, peace,
held wicked witch-hunts—lost control
in Salem which means Shalom, peace.
Religious "freedom" took its toll.

Poor "Goodie" Bishop, it was said
was foist by her own flamboyance;
lived as she dressed, in reckless red,
poor "Goodie" Bishop, it was said—
less witch than nasty annoyance.
Poor "Goodie" Bishop, it was said
was foist by her own flamboyance.

In Salem, Satan hissed and sneered
as "good" men hunted for witches—
embodiment of all they'd feared
in Salem. Satan hissed and sneered
at the righteous sons of bitches
in Salem; Satan smirked and sneered
while hypocrites hunted witches.
