Why She Likes It

by Amber Shields

She remembers the weather that day—painfully cold;
so wet she spent $10 on a yellow rain poncho,
and was still miserable the rest of the day.
She and Anne are sharing it in the photograph;
their hair is matted to their faces with rain.

She remembers who took the snapshot—
The boyfriend she hadn’t loved in months,
who held her hand when she didn’t want him to.

What she doesn’t remember is why,
despite everything, she is smiling.
But she likes it, because she looks pretty,
and Anne, who always looks beautiful,
doesn’t.
