Like a Deer

by Laurie Sewall

I lift my feet around

the lake till leaves

fall cool, fall empty

in my hands—

November keeps

me now. Soon

the moon will rise

and I'll remember

words once

lost, last spoken

here; I save those old

spare sticks, they all

say something.
