1897 oil on canvas: “A Woman Combing” by Wladyslaw Slewinski, Nat’l Museum, Kraków

Oh! Her eye’s spidery

lashes. Oh, the universe

of the night-blue quilt

she sits on while combing

her long hair, a bounty,

electric, in competition

with the glory of her singular

frame and her hour alone.

In her hand mirror she finds

the close and the beautiful.
